FROM A HYBRIDIZERS PERSPECTIVE

Thanksgiving is past and we have 95% of the peanut crop behind us. I can now focus on my daylilies. Daylilies have been an important part of my life for over 20 years. Regardless of the hard times many of us are going through, the daylilies bring a peace and serenity to our lives.

Our 2010 introductions have been carefully thought out and are all quality daylilies.
I will share a few specific thoughts about each introduction.

When BRIAR PATCH bloomed as a seedling the first thing out of my mouth was "this daylily looks like a briar patch". The seedling was put outside the following year and once established, B.P. was one of our most exotic seedlings with teeth. B.P. has been admired and requested by top teeth hybridizers. This year I had the opportunity to cross several other toothy cultivars to BRIAR PATCH. We are excited about our crop of toothy seedlings for due to bloom in 2010.

H. EDD CHAIN was named after a fine gentleman from Mississippi who loves his daylilies. This seedling was exactly what I had been looking for as a breeder for years.  It has a near perfect scape. The clarity of color is white with a touch of cream with a dark eye and edge. I anticipate this will be one of the most used daylilies in our program for years to come. Also, if you show daylilies, this is one you don’t want to miss.

TREASURE THAT I SEEK and H EDD CHAIN are the last two daylilies from JELLY MAKER that we have at this time. We have used TREASURE THAT I SEEK for hybridizing tall well branched scapes, patterns, solid eyes, and edges with teeth. The rebloom in hot weather will have small teeth appear around the edge of the petals. As an added bonus, I would definitely suggest T.T.I.S. for shows.

BUT NOW I SEE, I believe, is the first TET BLUE OASIS kid  to be introduced. This was the first patterned daylily that I treated of Liz Salter’s to use in my program. BUT NOW I SEE has also been important breeder for blue eyes. Patterned eyes are very tricky and we've found out that temperature plays and important role in color or shades of color in patterned daylilies. So accordingly, patterned  daylilies will vary in color and pattern on different days and will vary in different parts of the country. Nevertheless, BUT NOW I SEE  should be important breeder for patterns.

ETERNAL TREASURE has definitely been a treasure trove breeder for reds, purples, lavenders with edges of creams, golds, and greens in our hybridizing program. ETERNAL TREASURE doesn't have much of an edge but does throw all kinds of fancy edges. I used E.T. extensively and have a huge crop of kids coming for 2010. There'll be excitement produced by this daylily!

HOPES AND DREAMS,  A LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN, and SURROUNDED BY LOVE are all pastels for this 2010. I'm confident these daylilies will produce green edge hybridizing results..

HOPES AND DREAMS is showing more lavender than pink, so this year I primarily used it with purple daylilies in hopes of blooming seedlings with  green edges.

LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN was mainly used for full formed flowers. LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN, the parentage is (ANGELS GATHER AROUND x SEEDLING). The SEEDLING is out of  two seedlings Bill Waldrop acquired from me several years ago. They were out of TET SILOAM RALPH HENRY, TET DENA MARIE, and TET LINDA AGIN along with a few other named varieties.

SURROUNDED BY LOVE is fully formed and as round as a biscuit! The ruffled bloom is lent from TET SILOAM RALPH HENRY and TET LINDA AGIN. S.B.L. is one of our most used daylilies because of it’s form. A great flower!

From a hybridizers perspective, considering I appreciate the opinion of other hybridizers, I hope this helps.

Have a healthy and prosperous 2010,

Larry Grace
